Ömercan Şakar
Drummer, composer based in Brooklyn, NY since 2007. Originally coming from Izmir, Turkey, he started taking up drums by himself at an early age. After taking several private lessons, he started to perform in the music scene in Izmir and Istanbul. He has attended many workshops all over the world with significant musicians including Dan Weiss, Mark Guiliana, Al Foster, Sam Yahel, Doug Weiss, Antonio Sanchez, Horacio El Negro Hernandez, Charlie Persip, Mike Clark, Jim Mola, Mario Raja, Marvi La Spina, BrunoTommaso, Claudio Fasoli, Antonio Zambrini, Seligo Jazz Quartet, Ilaria Patassini, Stefano Cesare, Alessandro Girotto, Fulvio Maras, Ettore Fioravanti, Francesco Petreni, Massimo Manzi, Stefano Zenni. In 2006 Omercan won a scholarship to attend the 36th International Summer Masterclasses of Siena Jazz Festival in Siena, Italy. During his time there, he began to understand contemporary music which is now his current interest. Immediately after Siena, he won the first prize for The Virtual Drummer School’s International Competition, which awarded him with a scholarship for The Drummers Collective School of Music in New York City. There he studied with Ian Froman, Peter Retzlaff, Bob Quaranta, Joe Fitzgerald, Pat Petrillo, Frank Gravis and Fred Klatz . Omercan has performed with Dave Allen, Ibrahim Maalouf, Bob Lanzetti, Ilhan Ersahin, Matt Clohesy, Bob Quaranta, Joe Fitzgerald, Spencer Zahn, Francesco Beccaro, Christian Almiron, Sebastien Amman, Claudio Fasoli, Mario Raja, Marvi La Spina, Bruno Tommaso, Elvan Arici, Keisa Brown Kagan Yildiz, Baran Say, Yavuz Daridere, Tamer Temel, Kursat And, Bugra Balci, Maya Sharpe, Geo Progulakis, Sana Nagano, Harvey Valdes, Vladan Mijatovic, Martin Seiler, Eva Lawitts, Caleb J Mcmahon... After life changing experience at The Collective School, he started to work around the city in various projects and also he had a chance to study privately with one of his legends of all time Dan Weiss in New York City. He has been working on his own project PSYCHAUDIO with Martin Seiler since 2015 which started as jam sessions at the legendary music club Nublu in New York City. Psychaudio is a renegade music collective based in New York City. Lead by Omercan Sakar on drums and Martin Seiler on Saxophone, Psychaudio implements experimental electronics into their acoustic setup of Trumpet, Saxophone, Piano, Bass, and Drums. Their signature sound, dark and brooding as the bowels of a city at night that is in fact anything but asleep, reflects the real New York as well as the personalities of each of the band members. Caleb McMahon on trumpet, Eva Lawitts on bass, and the pianist Vladan Mijatovic comprise the band’s line up of NYC’s forefront music pioneers along with Martin and Omercan. Their debut album Connect has been released online on October 27th 2017, under Kabak&Lin Records
